Our Methods

Contour Lines provides grants to smallholder farmers under agreement that they comply with required regenerative methods, four rules that help conserve soil, build fertility, reduce dependence on chemical inputs, and establish organic Food Forest agroforestry systems on contour.

1. Plant legume trees on Contour

Gliricidia sepium, Inga edulis and other fast-growing trees form the backbone of these agroforestry sites, living barriers on contour that stop soil erosion, help crops with shade and fix soil nitrogen.  Regular coppicing (pruning) also provides organic material….

2. Lay logs and branches on Contour

Physical barriers slow rainwater runoff and prevent soil erosion.

3. Lay mulch around Crops

Organic Material feeds soil life, builds nutrients and protects soil from erosive and drying elements.

4. No chemicals.

Instead of pesticides, plagues controlled through organic sprays like neem… and naturally reduced through improved soil health and therefore plant resilience.

Instead of herbicides, weeds reduced by naturally by agroforestry succession and shade… or chopped by machete.
