Value-added Processing

Contour Lines’ Value-adding” department purchases, processes and markets the harvests of our Food Forest projects. This initiative brings income to families and further incentivizes the transition to regenerative land uses.

Contour Lines provides equipment and training for rural families to launch their own businesses or cooperatives–drying, fermenting, canning–that both preserve their harvests for food security, and add value for income. Ultimately these businesses validate and sustain the regenerative transition of lands, ultimately leading to a regenerative transition of local economies.

Contour Lines’ value-added processing (VAP) began in August of 2020, receiving shipments of yuca, platano and pina from the first Food Forest sites. Now in the summer of 2022 months, these VAP have:

  • developed recipes and established markets for 15 value-added products,
  • supplying 9 store locations around Antigua with said products,
  • purchased over 10,000 lbs of produce from 9 families
  • established value-adding facilities and equipment with 3 local families, who now ship and process their communities’ harvests.
